ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
OK y'all...Mr. Earl is setting out on a 1400 mile round trip voyage to the north coast. The 'Cad has a 12 disk CD changer and all twelve slots will be loaded with Dead. I've already got half picked out, edited for 80 minutes, burned and loaded...but I'm taking requests for the other six. Just so the trip is enjoyable for moi...and my own personal tastes I'm narrowing the field to the 70's. Here's what I've got so far.
4-26-71 Fillmore East w/ Duane Allman
5-16-72 Radio Luxembourg
6-10-73 RFK - Dicky Betts
5-14-74 Adams Field House, U of Montana
6-17-75 Winterland - "Jerry & Friends"
4-16-78 Huntington Civic Center, Huntington WV
Ok all you Oprah wannabees, here's your chance to pile on...I'm not suggesting that I've got the best of the 70's covered...so send Mr. Earl to Toledo with some style!

Oops Can't count! 5 to go.
Add Colgate Univ. (Matrix or Aud) 77-11-04. Can't (won't) hurt.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Earl,
Nice list and I don't want to be Oprah but tell me about the 4-16-78 Huntington WV pick. Not familiar with the show.
What the hell, I'll throw in one pick, 12-6-73 Cleveland, my favorite Dark Star - rest of show smokes also!!!!!!!!!

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Zimmy: Nice show with a laid back pace...decent setlist, sleeper venue. Unusual set list. Not on par with most of the 77 monsters, but holds it's own for 78-79 shows.
Here's the details:

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
The Huntington show is similar to Colgate in several ways and I got to admit an even faster Eyes than Colgate - hard to best! But, the second set Playin through everything and back to Playin an hour later is very rare in by the late 70's and beyond.
Still worth additional ear candy for the Road!

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Get the 5-25-77 show at the Mosque in Richmond. It's my favorite show, and it's great for driving. You can download it in MP3 format from gdlive: [outdated gdlive]
I'm waiting for the Doc to pick this show for one of his Oprah's picks. He even calls it one of the greatest underrated shows in his description on the Archive page for it.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Earl,
I know it's tried and true and is on all the lists but if you haven't played it in awhile, take Louisville, 1974. And ditto for Binghampton 1977. Otherwise do take Colgate '77 or the Lyceum 5/26/72. I'd also give Seneca College, Toronto, ON a go. It's a sweet show and although my copy runs too fast you might have access to a better one.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Hey Earl,
Greetings from Thailand!
Have an awesome adventure, wish I were on an American RD Trip this week. One of my fav. things in the world is driving X that big ol' nation listening to Jerry and Co.
2-23-74 - The day before the Doc's #3 pick
10-19-74 - Another Winterland Beauty
6-24-76 - My mother gave birth to me less than two hours away from the venue, while this concert was going on! I would guess I came out during the Franklin's.
6-7-77 - Summer Time in Winterland!
* 9-19-74 - OK, this is Little Feat, but a perfect show for your trip.
Enjoy

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
I'm not going to add to the musical suggestions here, all of which are excellent, but I will throw in my two cents on the media you will be using. While burning shows to disk is light years ahead of just a few years ago, it's nothing compared to the sheer joys of a portable MP3 player. Now, discs will limit you to 80 minutes of tunage, making it necessary to split shows into two or sometimes even three disks, or you may have to decide which songs to cut, something I always tried to avoid being a strong believer that every song of a show was a needed part of the whole. Let's say you go to recordable DVD, you can put more tunes on it, but the car ready DVD players are few and rather expensive. My MP3 player (a 60 GB I-Pod) holds an ungodly amount of music and allows me to listen to entire shows without having to wait for disk changes or having to make them manually if one does not have a changer. My car still has a cassete player and I just use a Sony adapter which lets me run my IPod through the cassete and the sound is exceptional (note: I have tried a few of the FM transmitter units and they are fine if you are not in a good sized metropolitan area, but here in Phoenix at least I never get a clean signal no matter what frequency I try). If you wanted to, many of the newer radios have direct ports specifically for MP3 players. If you are in your car as much as I am (45 minute commute to work each way and frequent road trips on the weekend) I cannot urge you enough to invest in this set-up. Tremendous storage space, great sound, ease of use, ability to change loaded shows with ease, portability (I have a speaker dock at my desk at work that I plug my player into and continue listening to tunes) and affordability are just a few reasons why no travelling Head should be without one. And I'm not just a client, I'm the president....I wish.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Excellent suggestion, i second that emotion...
PS. The new iPods are now up to 80 GB, plus they have video for times when you're at the red lights or just chillin on the side of the road or in your tent.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
If you haven't gotten the upgraded version of I-Tunes that allows for "Gapless Playback", you need to. The only complaint I had against Dead on the IPod was the oftentimes buzz interrupting gap between songs, but thankfully the folks at Apple have finally corrected that one glitch.

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Can't believe not one of you has recommended anything from the year that started off the decade: 1970.
My picks for that year alone would include 9/19/70 (gotta have a great Dark Star for the road trip); 2/11/70 (or basically your favorite show from the Fillmore East Run; personally I like the Duane Allman appearance on Feb 11), 5/6/70 for the Dancin', and either 11/6 or 6/70 Capitol Theater to round out the year. Gotta have some acoustic Jerry and the boys for the road trip!

Re: ROAD TRIP!!!!! |
Packing my bags...burning disks like crazy, y'all saved the best for last, an acoustic set! Got the Richmond 77, Louisville 74. Had to pass on the Strand Lyceum 72, just wore it out in regular rotation last week. Had to opt for Rochester NY 77, couldn't find the Binghampton or Colgate shows, but 2 from 77 will be fine. (Any upstate NY shows bring back memories since I was once a member of the SUNY Cartel.) Thanks all that participated...and see y'all down the road!
